About Us

Valentine Alcock (1955-74)

WHO WE ARE

We are a small family-run charity. Each year, we help a number of young people to develop their skills in playing a musical instrument by paying part or all of the costs involved in their attendance at an educational activity.

ABOUT VALENTINE

Valentine Alcock was a talented clarinettist and saxophonist from a single-parent, mixed-race, background. Tragically, Valentine drowned at the age of 19 shortly before he was due to take up a place at Cambridge University.

In his memory, the family established a small fund to allow others to follow in his musical footsteps.

“The week provided fun, intense and info-packed workshops with top professional percussionists, allowing us to gain knowledge in areas where we had less experience such as Drumline and Percussion Quartet as well as tips and tricks both on and off the stage.”

Nathan, London
(National Youth Percussion Orchestra course)

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Scholarship began as a fund created in Valentine’s memory to enable young musicians from single parent families to take part in a summer school which their families could not afford. This scheme was expanded and reformulated in 2008 as a charity registered with the Charities Commission.

The charity is family run and largely family funded. The current trustees are all relatives of Valentine:

1. Mr. Bob O’Hagan – Hon. Secretary
2. Mr. James Douglas
3. Mr Richard O’Hagan
4. Ms Kate O’Hagan
