How We Help

We pay all or part of the fees associated with approved activities, including course fees and any associated residential costs. Our awards focus on musical education rather than rehearsal and performance. Typically though not exclusively, our awards enable the instrumentalist to join with others in music making.

No payments are made direct to applicants or their families, except as contributions towards transport costs. Once an application is approved, we notify the activity provider that we will pay the agreed amount after the activity has taken place.

We DO provide funding for attendance in the following activities:
  • summer schools, masterclasses and workshops with a clear educational component
  • other short-term residential and non-residential courses with a substantial component of teaching or coaching in technical skills or performance of unfamiliar pieces
  • associated transport costs necessary for attendance

We DO NOT provide funding for the
following activities:

    • development of skills in singing
    • development of skills in musical composition
    • regular instrumental lessons
    • purchase or rental of musical instruments or related equipment
    • school fees
    • examination fees
    • performance tours or similar activities focused on rehearsal and performance
    • an activity similar to one we have previously funded for the same individual
    • an activity occurring within two years of our previous funding for the same individual

“The NYSO residencies opened a world of music to me in a way that was both inspiring and transformative. Each piece felt like a chance to step deeper into the language of orchestral double bass, guided by extraordinary tutors and with musicians who share the same passion. The atmosphere was one of creativity, warmth, and discovery — a place where I could truly flourish and grow. I was offered the opportunity to lead the bass section for one piece. This challenged me to develop stronger leadership skills, greater musical awareness, and deeper confidence in my playing.”
